Rutaba never saw the second kick coming. One moment he was still trying to shake off the punch that had snapped his head sideways. The next, both Valtraxian soldiers were all over him.
The world turned into a messy blur of pain. A fist smashed into his ribs. A knee drove hard into his stomach. A kick slammed across his back. Another strike caught him right in the side of the head. Every time he tried to get his feet back under him, another attack came right away. Every little opening he tried to make got crushed before he could use it. The two soldiers worked together with brutal efficiency, never giving him any room to breathe or think straight.
Pain exploded through his whole body. His ribs screamed. His stomach felt like it caved in. His vision kept blurring. Then the final kick landed. It hit his gut like a truck going full speed. All the air rushed out of his lungs.
The whole city spun around him. And then he crashed into the building. Concrete exploded outward as his body tore straight through the side of the structure. Glass shattered everywhere. Steel beams screamed as they bent. Whole offices got wiped out in the path he left behind. He smashed through room after room before finally getting buried deep inside the broken building.
Everything went quiet for a moment. Rutaba just hung there, not moving. His ears were ringing bad. His vision kept doubling. Everything hurt so much. Blood trickled down the side of his face. One arm felt completely numb. Every single breath burned like fire in his chest. The old Rutaba would have charged straight back out there right away, screaming and swinging wild, trying to prove he was tougher and that he could win anyway. But that Rutaba was gone. Zhongli had buried him under a mountain of bruises and lessons. Observe. Think. Adapt. The lesson wasn’t about being stronger than the attack. It was about surviving long enough to figure it out.
Slowly, Rutaba pulled himself free from the rubble. His legs almost gave out under him. Those two soldiers had completely overwhelmed him in a straight fight. There was no point pretending otherwise. If he tried the same thing again, it would get him killed. And if he died here… the Earth and everyone would die too. That thought cut through all the pain like a knife. The panic disappeared. His breathing slowed down. His mind got clearer. Something shifted behind his eyes. All the childish frustration, all the reckless excitement, all the need to prove himself — it all faded away. What was left was the part Zhongli had quietly forged in him. The part some people jokingly called Rutabaga. Not stronger. Not faster. Just colder. Sharper. More dangerous.
Rutaba lowered himself into a crouch and started moving deeper into the broken building. The place was barely holding together. Collapsed offices created narrow little pathways. Broken support columns leaned at weird, dangerous angles. Twisted steel hung from the shattered ceilings. Whole floors had caved in halfway. It wasn’t a building anymore. It was a trap waiting to be used. And unlike the soldiers hunting him, Rutaba was small enough to slip through all of it. Outside he could hear them coming. Heavy footsteps. Confident footsteps. The footsteps of guys who thought the fight was already over.
Rutaba crouched behind a collapsed wall and peeked through a narrow gap. One soldier stayed outside. The other came in. Exactly what he wanted. Not because they were dumb. Because they were hunters. Hunters always spread out when they’re tracking something. And divided enemies were way easier to deal with. Rutaba waited.
The soldier started searching room after room. Walls exploded under heavy punches. Debris got kicked aside. Whole sections got torn apart without any care. Rutaba never attacked right away. He just watched. The same way Zhongli taught him to watch the stones. Not the attack itself. The rhythm. The pattern. The little openings. Every move the soldier made told him something. Every decision showed a weakness.
The Valtraxian soldier kept pushing deeper into the building. Farther from his partner. Farther from support. Farther from safety. Rutaba followed him from above, silent and patient, staying completely out of sight. The soldier finally paused in another ruined office to look around. That was the moment. Rutaba dropped. Both feet landed hard between the soldier’s shoulders. Not enough to finish him. Just enough to make him stumble forward. Rutaba immediately launched away before the counterattack could land. The soldier’s angry punch smashed straight through an office wall. Concrete exploded. The whole building shook. Rutaba noticed it right away. One of the support columns had cracked. A tiny, cold grin appeared on his face. Now he had a plan.
The soldier roared and charged after him. Rutaba ran. Not away. Through the building. He led the Valtraxian deeper and deeper. Every missed punch shattered another wall. Every angry kick weakened another support beam. Every frustrated swing did more damage to the structure. Rutaba never stopped moving. Never gave him a clean shot. Never tried to fight fair. The soldier got angrier and sloppier with every second. Exactly what Rutaba wanted. The building started groaning loudly. Support columns snapped. Whole sections began to shift. Rutaba reached the weakest floor and dove straight through a shattered window. The soldier lunged after him. Half a second later the entire inside of the building gave way. The collapse sounded like thunder.
Floors pancaked on top of each other. Concrete slabs smashed together. Steel beams twisted and broke. Thousands of tons of debris swallowed the soldier whole. The shockwave rolled out into the streets. Dust exploded into the sky. The building was just… gone.
Rutaba landed hard on a neighboring rooftop. Pain shot through his legs. His ribs screamed. His shoulder almost gave out. But he stayed on his feet. And one soldier was gone. Completely gone. The collapse had been total. No movement. No sounds. No escape. The building had become his grave. Rutaba didn’t waste time staring. The second soldier would already be looking for him. He disappeared back into the smoke. The ruined city hid him. The fires hid him. The chaos hid him.
Minutes passed. The last Valtraxian searched everywhere, getting more and more frustrated. Rutaba watched. Learned. Waited. The soldier finally climbed up onto a big pile of rubble for a better view. Big mistake. That high spot left him wide open. Rutaba moved right away. Not straight at the soldier. Toward the already damaged road underneath him. The street had been weakened by all the earlier fighting. Collapsed sewer tunnels had hollowed out the ground. Cracks ran everywhere through the asphalt. Rutaba quietly wedged loose rebar and broken pieces deeper into the weak spots. Then another. Then another. Not enough to bring it down right away. Just enough to make it ready to fail.
The soldier finally spotted him. The chase started again. The Valtraxian charged hard. Rutaba ran. The distance closed fast. He could hear the heavy footsteps getting closer. One wrong move and it would be over. The broken road got closer. Rutaba leaped across it. The soldier followed right behind. The weakened ground finally gave out. The entire street collapsed under the soldier’s weight.
Concrete shattered. Asphalt folded inward. The soldier dropped straight into the sinkhole below. Rutaba landed, rolled, and turned around fast. The Valtraxian wasn’t dead. He was already trying to climb out. Just like Rutaba expected. He started grabbing concrete slabs and shoving them over the edge. Then more. Twisted steel. Broken streetlights. Collapsed beams. Anything heavy he could find. The soldier fought hard to pull himself free. Rutaba made sure every try got harder. The sinkhole kept widening. The tunnels underneath finally gave out completely. The ground collapsed again. And again. The earth itself opened up. Concrete. Steel. Asphalt. Dirt. Everything came crashing down. The soldier disappeared under a second avalanche. Then a third. The whole roadway folded in and buried him under thousands of tons of debris. A hand briefly pushed through the rubble. Then it vanished. The shifting ground swallowed it.
Silence. Nothing moved. Nothing came out. The ruined street settled. The trap had become a tomb. Rutaba stood there for a few seconds, breathing hard. Watching. Waiting. No movement. No escape. No second chance. Both soldiers were gone. Neither would be going back to Thalia. Neither would be hurting anyone else. Neither would be destroying more of Earth.
Rutaba finally stopped. His body was trembling. His chest rose and fell heavily. Sweat dripped down his face. Everything hurt so bad. He hadn’t won a fair fight. He knew that. A fair fight would have gone very differently. But fairness wasn’t the point. Protecting people was. Protecting Earth was. Protecting Inugami was.
The path was finally clear. Rutaba looked toward the smoke. Toward the fighting. Toward where his friend still needed him. His turquoise eyes hardened. No more hesitation.
No more fear. Just purpose. Then, without another word, the small Saiyan disappeared back into the ruins. Silent. Focused. Relentless. And a lot more dangerous than anyone had given him credit.
